How to Apply for E-Residency in Estonia

In 2022, I found myself at a crossroads. I had just closed the chapter on my first startup venture and I yearned for something new. A way to combine my love for travel with my passion for business. If this sounds like you, then the Estonian e-residency program might be the solution for you. In this guide, I'll share my personal experience as a fellow traveler. I also offer free consultation during your process.

What is Estonian E-Residency?

As I researched ways to maintain and expand my business while on the move, I stumbled upon the concept of Estonian e-residency. This program offered the perfect solution: Estonian e-residency is a digital identity program that allows non-Estonian residents to access Estonia's digital infrastructure and services. This digital identity, in the form of a smart card, grants you access to various online services, including establishing and managing an Estonian company, signing documents digitally, and accessing online banking. Take these pros and cons that I took from my application and see if it works for you:

How to Apply for Estonian E-Residency

Step 1: Prepare the Necessary Documents

To start your application, gather the following documents:

  • A valid passport-sized photo
  • A scan of your valid passport
  • A brief explanation of why you want to become an e-resident

Step 2: Visit the Estonian E-Residency Website

Go to the official Estonian e-residency website (https://e-resident.gov.ee/) and click on "Apply Now." If you want assistance during that process, I'm here to guide each one of you through the Estonian e-residency application process—for free. I wholeheartedly admire your adventurous travel spirit, and I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the freedom that e-residency can offer.

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

Complete the application form by providing your personal information and the reason for applying. At the last step they ask you where you want to pick up your e-residency card. You can pick it up from any larger city in Europe, which is quite convenient when you're already traveling. I was traveling through Spain by that time and picked Barcelona.

Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

Pay the €100 application fee online.

Step 5: Wait for Processing

Once your application is submitted, it will be reviewed. This process may take several weeks. For me it took 4 weeks.

Step 6: Collect Your E-Residency Card

If approved, you'll receive an email notification. You can then pick up your e-residency card from the Estonian Embassy or the pickup location you chose earlier.

Step 7: Activate Your Card

Follow the instructions provided to activate your e-residency card and set up your digital identity.

Step 8: Manage Your Business

Now that you have your e-residency, you can start managing your Estonian company online. This includes signing documents, accessing banking services, and more.
